Larry Matysik, the voice of classic Saint Louis professional wrestling, passed away from a battle with pneumonia today at 71.
In a Facebook post, SICW promoter Herb Simmons broke the news.
It’s with a heavy heart this morning that I come to each of you and give you the news that my good friend Larry Matysik has lost the battle. As many know, his health has been declining over the past several years. I ask that you keep his wife Pat and daughter Kelly in your thoughts and prayers, as the next few days will be hard for them.
Even though spinal stenosis limited the National & St. Louis Wrestling Hall of Famer’s mobility, Matysik still occasionally performed his SICW matchmaking and commentary duties this year.
An informal celebration of Larry’s life will be Sunday, December 2 from 4-7 P.M. at Renner Funeral Home in Belleville.
From Ben Simon:
Matysik’s introduction and decision announcement stylings live on through Drew Abbenhaus, Chris Roedel, Chris Kaelin, and me. It is a distinguished “Saint Louis style” that isn’t anywhere else.
I was so excited to work with Larry when I debuted as a ring announcer in 2010, for SICW. If I ever saw something illogical on the card, I knew he had my back, even if no one else cared. That is all that mattered.
He was the mind, the voice, the best.
